Community Outreach Center Counselor
The Community Outreach Center Counselor works on the drop-in floor and within the community to engage youth and offer resources. An average day entails management of up to 40 youth in the center, cooking meals, playing dominos or Scrabble with young people, driving vanloads of youth to free health clinics, talking to youth on the street and coordinating with other youth-serving agencies to provide wrap-around services.  Street outreach specifically involves beginning dialogue with young people where they congregate and offering safe alternatives, resources such as emergency shelter, needle exchange program information and referring to drop-in centers, while providing basic needs like blankets, hygiene kits, and hot soup. Community outreach involves connecting with other services providers, getting the word out to Seattle area schools, and working with police and local business leaders to advocate on behalf of youth. Youth engagement is intended to lead to movement into case management, housing, employment and education.  An ideal candidate will be comfortable working with homeless youth populations, and understand the issues surrounding homelessness in general and the effect on youth in particular. The ability to maintain professional boundaries at all times, while building healthy relationships with young people is essential. An interest in youth rights advocacy and the ability to work in a fast-paced and hectic environment is key to success. The ability to confidently cook nutritious meals for up to 35 people is strongly preferred.  This is a full-time position requiring regular evening hours.
