Employment Training

YouthCare Orion Center’s employment training programs are available to homeless, transitioning and at-risk young people ages 16-23 year olds.

The work training programs available are: the YWCA’s Working Zone Tile Project; the Barista Training and Education Program; and YouthTech.

Participants in all training programs are paid the Washington State minimum wage. Education and internship opportunities along with job development, placement and retention services are also provided.

Get Your Work On is a nine-hour employability workshop where youth learn about different career fields and complete a professional resume and cover letter.

Working Zone Tile Project

The Working Zone Tile Project conducted in collaboration with the YWCA is a 10-week arts-based, pre-employment training program offered to homeless youth. Participants learn basic employability skills (i.e., working with a supervisor and team, accepting feedback, and task completion) while working on art projects. Tile Project participants learn the techniques of hand building, throwing, and glazing of mosaics as well as basic woodworking and photography. Tile participants attend biweekly workshops called “Goals and Grubs” in which outside business professionals are invited to come in and talk.

YouthCare’s Barista Training and Education Program, in collaboration with FareStart, was established in 2003 to train Seattle/King County homeless youth as baristas (making and serving espresso). From this training, they gain employment skills while being provided with the long-term support necessary for at-risk youth to explore personal goals and prepare for long-term employment and education.

YouthCare provides a year of support services including education, internship placement, employment counseling and case management.

Services

“When I started the Barista Training Employment Program I was living on the streets and getting by day to day. Now I’m working full time, have my own apartment, and I even opened a bank account. The Barista Program helped me to see that I can get where I want to go with my life.”
