New York Times Publishes Two-Part Series on Homeless Youth

New York Times staff writer Ian Urbana brilliantly captures the daily struggle of homeless and runaway youth in his two part series: Running in the ShadowsPart One examines the recent upsurge in youth homelessness, and explores how these young people survive and protect each other.  Part Two focuses on how homeless young people often come to be sexually exploited, and the profound danger that such abuse involves.

YouthCare program staff have daily experience with the situations Urbana describes, and YouthCare as a whole has noticed a deeply disturbing increase in both the numbers of homeless youth and in the proportion of them being sexually exploited.  YouthCare is responding to this troubling rise by serving more young people this year than at any time in our 35-year history.  If you feel moved to take action by Running in the Shadows, please consider making a donation to support our work.

“When I started the Barista Training Employment Program I was living on the streets and getting by day to day. Now I’m working full time, have my own apartment, and I even opened a bank account. The Barista Program helped me to see that I can get where I want to go with my life.”
