Bellevue High Students Give to YouthCare

Last year, Chris Estafani surprised YouthCare staff with a check for $3,600. Chris, the advisor for the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) club at Bellevue High School, had chosen YouthCare to be the recipient of a winter fundraising event involving the whole school. They held a beard-growing contest among the male teachers.

For a month, teachers grew their beards. Then students voted by donating money to the teacher they thought had the best one. After the contest, some teachers shaved their beards into funny patterns, much to the amusement of their students.

Last June, Chris and his students Hohn Lee, Vivian Tam, Alice Hahn, and Jenny Nave toured the Orion Center and got to see firsthand how their contribution benefited homeless youth. As Jenny Nave explained, “It was very exciting and a good experience for us, as students, to see what it is actually like and to know that there is something like YouthCare to turn to. What you, and all of YouthCare staff do is amazing. Thank you very much.”

This year, Chris and his students held the beard-growing contest again and gave us an even bigger check—$4,600!—and came back for another tour of the Orion Center in May. According to Chris, the competition was fierce this year among the teachers.

Support like this from the community means so much to everyone at YouthCare, and we’d like to thank all the teachers and students at Bellevue High School for joining in the fight to end youth homelessness.

The two donations from Bellevue High School’s Gay Straight Alliance club help covr YouthCare’s operating costs, including things such as paying the electric bills so that our computers keep running, filling the gas tank in our street outreach van, or buying food for the Orion Center’s kitchen.

Our website now has a new online donation form to make it easier to contribute in the fight to end youth homelessness. Donors have the option to be named or remain anonymous.

Gifts can be made in tribute to a loved one (whom we’ll be happy to notify). Donations can now be scheduled to reoccur monthly or annually as well as making a one-time gift.

“When I started the Barista Training Employment Program I was living on the streets and getting by day to day. Now I’m working full time, have my own apartment, and I even opened a bank account. The Barista Program helped me to see that I can get where I want to go with my life.”
