EMPLOYMENT TRAINING

YouthCare offers a pre-employment training program through the YWCA’s Working Zone and offers employment training through the Youth Barista Training and Education Program.

The Working Zone

YouthCare’s pre-employment training program is designed to help homeless teens learn essential employment skills. Launched in 1995 as a partnership with the YWCA, the Working Zone teaches youth critical job skills through the art of working with ceramic, clay and mosaics.

Youth at the Working Zone learn how to make and decorate mugs, bowls, vases, ceramic tiles and figures. Through art, youth not only find an outlet for their creativity, they also learn critical employability skills and increase their self-esteem.

The Working Zone teaches youth transferable employment skills like working with a supervisor, finishing a large project, timeliness and discipline. Workshops dealing with employment issues are held to teach youth how to research for jobs, write resumes and cover letters, practice interviewing and even open a bank account. Youth at the Working Zone earn minimum wage.

Youth Barista Training and Education Program

Can confidence, achievement and self-sufficiency come from a cup of coffee? We think it can! YouthCare and FareStart’s Youth Barista Training and Education Program (BTEP) teaches youth barista and employment skills, while providing the long-term support necessary to explore personal goals and prepare for long-term employment and education.

The BTEP is for homeless and at-risk youth, ages 16-21. The program was created as collaboration between YouthCare and FareStart. YouthCare provides a year of support services, including education, employment counseling and case management. FareStart provides 8 weeks of hand-on Barista Training. This program gives youth the skills and confidence they need to have hope for their future.

YouthTech

YouthTech is an employment training program, in partnership with Interconnection.org, that works with 40+ homeless youth each year.

As articulated by Seattle King County’s Committee to End Homelessness and by the United Way, among other local stakeholders, the main strategy to reduce homelessness among youth and young adults is twofold: increasing access to education and employment opportunities, while providing the supportive services necessary to achieving success in these areas. This project meets this local need for targeted, comprehensive employment and educational services for homeless youth.
